Tesco Extra Store – Dundalk

Tesco Extra Store – Dundalk

The Tesco Extra Store in Dundalk involved a €24m on-site replacement of the original Dundalk Shopping Centre and involved the provision of a temporary store and car park, phased demolition of the existing shopping centre and construction of a Format 60 Store.

The store was constructed on stilts with car parking under. The development included a number of mall units at car park level also a significant public plaza. The service yard for the store is elevated above the car park.

The structure consists of a structural steel frame on piled foundations. The floor plates utilise composite metal decks with the suspended service yard designed to accommodate HGV loading.

The civils for the project where complex due to a significant amount of existing below ground services and site constraints. The works included the open and closed culverting of the Ramparts River and the use of sustainable drainage solutions to significantly reduce the historical surface water outfall from the site.

The challenging programme required a collaborative approach amongst the design team and the project was completed using BIM for all elements which resulted in significant programme savings.

EirEng also provided temporary works design support to the demolition contractor as part of the original shopping centre phased demolition.
