Recycled Concrete Aggregates – Irish Concrete Society Seminar

Recycled Concrete Aggregates – Irish Concrete Society Seminar

Project Engineer Manus Bester recently attended a seminar on Recycled Concrete Aggregates at The Trinity City Hotel.

Professor Ravindra Kumar Dhir OBE presented a very interesting talk on further possibilities to reduce the carbon footprint in concrete – an area that we as structural engineers can have a big impact on, through our specifications and working closely with contractors and concrete suppliers.

With NetZero2050 being set globally, and construction materials being one of the largest contributors, it’s important to understand all the tools and levers at our disposal.

Recycled concrete aggregates from construction, demolition, and excavation waste, can be used as an alternative to natural aggregates when specified correctly and it’s an area EirEng have long been trying to exploit for efficiencies in cost, material waste and overall emissions, but there is always room for improvement!

There are a lot of opportunities out there to keep improving the sustainability of all constituent parts of our building materials, but we all need to keep working together to make sure it is prioritised correctly, and implemented.

Thank you to the Irish Concrete Society for hosting to the event and to Professor Ravindra Kumar Dhir OBE, author of Sustainable Construction Materials – Recycled Aggregates.
