Jones Food Co (Vertical Farm)
EirEng are excited to be partnering Jones Food Company in the race to build the world’s largest vertical farm.
The new indoor farm near Bristol will provide 70 tennis courts worth of growing space able to supply fresh produce to UK supermarkets all year round.
EirEng are providing structural consultancy and design services, aiming to transform a former steel foundry into a high-tech agricultural facility. As part of a joint effort to promote the sustainable reuse of buildings, we have been working closely with Jones Food Co. to fulfil their ambitions of maximising the available growing area and save the foundry from demolition.
The solution has been to raise the roof, increasing internal clear height and achieving additional growing capacity within the existing footprint. Using survey information compiled on site visits, detailed analysis has been carried out that will allow the reuse of almost all the existing structure. The existing rafter will be removed, an extension spliced to all perimeter columns and the rafter re-connected at high level. The additional stability required to deal with the increase in wind loads will be provided by an extension along one side of the building that will be utilised for storage and operations.
